KLTF2014

This years tango fest was...curious, in the sense that it was a funny mix of people who were not from the region and decided to show up, as well as quite lacking in regional representation. But above all, it was kinda fun, and yet again I find myself miles away from the seriously nervous dancer I was 3 years back and even quite recently last year. I don't know what it is but I've found my feet I guess? This grounding that I need to not be nervous and to interpret the music and not care about what everyone else around me is thinking.

Eons ago wise words were shared with me on the dance floor of Vitosh Guesthouse by J. "Don't bother with them, they're all too concerned with themselves anyway". Some things come back from the past and hit you hard when you realise exactly what was meant.

Had a couple of dream tandas, beautiful waltzes where my partner exclaimed "you're flying!" and proceeded to try and lift a very panicked me. If I could respond to him again I would say, I can't trust easily, I can't throw all my weight at you because even I don't know how to handle it. I will soon though. Promise.

Beautiful Di Sarli tanda strung together ALL my favourite songs and it was wonderful wonderful wonderful. It's so refreshing coming across someone who just holds you and does not move, so that you can feel their breathing and their heartbeat. Challenging and powerful nuevo style moves (detected a hint of Chicho). Tough 3 hour long classes that wiped all energy from me but learnt a wealth of information.

Colgadas
Movement requires a sitting down motion. Transfer the center of receptivity from your chest to your navel as your space is being invaded and move to the limits set by your partner. Don't lean the torso back as all this does it make you heavier, but also, trust.

Enrosques
Movement to the side step from the front cross requires your ribs to be prepared for the next motion (back step). Ribs always in and always facing partner to receive energy, when moving from side to side, move the ribs around in a circular fashion to open up the hip movement into the back step. Do not drop and sink into the step, energy always up top.

Beautiful weekend, entirely exhausted but exhilarated.

Simple

After the countless videos, watching the performances by passing Tango teachers, performances by stage Tango dancers, sitting and absorbing Milongas, the one couple that sticks in my mind has to be T and his fiance who met through Tango in Argentina. Their seamless blending, the fact that she didn't even need to be wearing shoes and their swapping of roles. Even though I was exposed to this early on the clueless beginnings of Tango, you could already appreciate the intimacy between the two. In hindsight after a bit more experience, it becomes even clearer that, that would be the ultimate Tango experience. It's like staring at something without the tools to understand it, then later when you come back with the tools in hand, it hits you, "ah hah!" that's what it is! It's like being told, "this will be useful in life later, trust me", and staring at math sets that have no correlation with your life, until later when you're facing a job assessme...

Stages

It's funny how I often think of topics to write at moments where I have nothing to write them on, which results in me typing a one-liner in my sms column as a trigger which later when I go back to refer to tends to make absolutely no sense to me! But yes anyway, Tango stages! 1) You have entirely NO idea what the hell the dance is about and walking seems like the most impossible thing to do. You jump up and down inside when you finally manage 5 meters w/o crashing into each other and are elated when the instructor comes over and leads you in a way that you actually feel like you know what you doing. You go away completely and utterly motivated to want to know more. 2) Basics are handed to you, ochos! impossible things! Molinete's! wtf, my legs can do that....omg leader why are you a beginner too! 3)Sacadas and ganchos and all the other good stuff. Now we're talking. 4)After getting to know the community and everyone around (obviously Tango isn't just a dance, ...
